A structured pathway for young athletes
The FFA Youth Athletics Development Programme provides young athletes with structured coaching, regular training and an environment where they can develop their abilities progressively over time.
Whether new to athletics, competing at school level or already participating in competitive athletics, the programme is designed to help athletes understand where they are now and work towards where they want to go.
Our approach
ASSESS → DEVELOP → COMPETE → REVIEW
We begin by understanding the athlete’s current ability, experience and development needs.
Training then focuses on building the foundations that matter:
- Speed and acceleration
- Running technique and movement
- Coordination and athletic ability
- Strength and power development
- Endurance where appropriate
- Event-specific skills
- Competition preparation
- Discipline, consistency and confidence
A safe and supportive environment
Parents want to know that their children are training in an environment where they can feel comfortable and supported.
FFA Athletics provides access to a structured training environment with 24-hour security, suitable sporting facilities and a supervised coaching environment at St Peter’s College.
We aim to create a culture where young athletes can train, learn, compete and develop alongside other athletes while receiving appropriate guidance.
More than training
We want athletes to understand that development is a process.
They learn how to:
- Train consistently
- Listen and respond to coaching
- Set realistic goals
- Prepare for competition
- Learn from performances
- Handle setbacks
- Take increasing responsibility for their development
Who is the programme for?
The programme is suitable for young athletes who:
- Enjoy running or competing
- Want to improve their athletics ability
- Participate in school or club athletics
- Are interested in developing their potential
- Are prepared to commit to regular training
FFA currently focuses on athletics / track events rather than general sports coaching.
Start with an assessment
Before joining the programme, we recommend an FFA Youth Athletics Assessment.
The assessment provides an opportunity to understand your child’s current abilities and development needs before recommending the most appropriate training pathway.
Youth Athletics Assessment: R350
If the programme is considered appropriate, we will discuss the available training options with you.
